In a bid to promote quality education in their community, a community-based development group, Like Minds Okere Warri, has donated educational materials to Junior Secondary School students, resident in Okere Community, Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.
Our Senior Roving Correspondent, reports that the educational empowerment programme tagged “Catch Them Young, These Eagles Must Fly High” was held Friday 28th March at Ikengbuwa Primary School Ajamimogha Warri.
The items presented to the students include; School bags, mathematical set, English textbooks and Mathematics textbooks
Presenting the items to the students, Mr. Stanley Omagbitse Akuruli, one of the organisers of the annual event, said the educational empowerment programme was a brainchild of six individuals, (Iwere Anthony, Anireto Godwin, Oduore Chaninomi, Omagbemi Bernard, and Amorighoye Jeffrey,) who grew up in Okere Community, and was passionate about giving back to their community.
“We gather here today to support our community. We reject the idea that "school is a scam" and are committed to fostering an environment where our children understand that education is the essential key to unlocking the doors of success.”
“We know that the government alone cannot do it all, hence we have put our resources together to empower these students with learning materials that can aid their studies.
“We want to ensure that the students from Okere community have role models within their community who have achieved success, inspiring them to believe in their own potential for success as well.
He encouraged the children to prioritize their education and advised them against selling the items they received, but use them to prepare for their upcoming exams.
Mr Akuruli noted that the students who benefited from the program will be closely monitored and will take an exam at the end of the term. The top-performing student will be awarded a scholarship by the organization.
In the same vein the headteacher of Ikenguwa Primary School, Mrs. Esther Okpaghoro, admonished the beneficiaries to use the opportunity they have to study, saying if you don’t go to school, you can’t fit into the society.
Pastor Felix Okome spoke on the topic, “determination leads to success," drawing inspiration from Psalm 75:6. He encouraged students to remain steadfast and committed in all their endeavours.
The excited students expressed their gratitude to the group for their generous gesture, assuring them that they would put the items to good use.
